The following are simple, effective guidelines that diabetics might want to take note when they are planning to travel.

Getting All Ready

1. Make sure that you see your doctor before any plans of travel. Have him monitor if you have normal blood sugar levels. Immunization shots can be given provided that you need them.

2. Ask your doctor to provide you with prescriptions for insulin and other medications. Do not forget that a medical certificate is needed when you travel as well. This should explain your present medical condition and what you need to do to treat it.

3. Keep all your necessary paraphernalia securely in your luggage. Insulin medicines, oral medications, syringes and glucose meters or blood testing supplies. Insulin must be well kept and stored in securely. It requires a specific temperature to maintain its potency.

4. Wear comfortable clothing especially shoes.

5. Prepare your ID and diabetes identity card. This is pretty much useful once you will require immediate medical attention.

6. Once you are all geared up for travel, then you must make sure that an appropriate diet is maintained all throughout your travel. Whether you have the type 1 or type 2 diabetes, it is important to keep your diet and activity in check. Keep air tight and well-wrapped food wherever you go in cases of low blood sugar levels. The blood sugar monitoring must be done religiously.

Some may think it calls for a painstaking effort of preparation while others may say its all a matter of getting used to such lifestyle and routine. But then again, diabetes should not hinder a diabetic from enjoying the splendor and fun of his travel and vacation; more so of his life. Take note that diabetes can be kept at bay with proper medical attention and of course vigilance and strict discipline.
